Getting angry on a regular basis can take its toll on your health, ruin your day and affect your ability to relate in a loving way with others. But how do you stop, when there are so many irritating people, deliberately trying to piss you off? I invite you now, to step up, and try my simple challenge for eliminating road rage, and find a sense of calm that will carry over into the rest of your day!
Rules: For 15 days in a row, when you are driving or riding in a car, say “God bless you, thank you”, to every driver that upsets you or makes you angry. No matter what they may have seemingly done, or how ridiculous their driving skill, and no matter what your emotional state, you will only say the magic words, “God bless you, thank you”. Saying it, will make you think about what you are saying, and why. It will make you think about this person as a gift, instead of your personal tormentor. You are thanking them, because by giving you the opportunity to bless them, you, in turn, will receive the blessing back. What we put out in the world, comes back to us eventually, and is usually multiplied.
If you forget, and find yourself using new and wildly creative expletives, just say “Cancel”, and override what you said with, “God bless you, thank you”. Remember, God has sent them to you for at least three possible reasons:
1. They needed your blessing. Remember we are all connected. They are going through something particularly difficult, that you know nothing about, such as cancer, a breakup, a death, loss of job, foreclosure etc., and could use some loving energy sent their way.
2. They are here to bless you. They were sent to remind you that you are always in the right place at the right time. By being irritating, they jolt you back to the present moment. Learn to trust. Maybe they are slowing you down...lets say you are 5 seconds ahead of your script, with all your pushing and controlling...so you’re missing, or will miss certain future timings, landmarks, opportunities or events. The universe is trying to get your life back on its schedule. (Your soul’s destiny has its own schedule, outside of what your ego may want.) An example of slowing down, could be a slow driver in front of you going well below the speed limit, or making you miss a traffic light. Maybe you were running late (your fault, not theirs). Just bless them, whatever the case may be, and trust you will get where you are going, and everything will be fine. They may even move out of your way, after your blessing. You may get to your destination at a seemingly perfect time, or an even better time.
3. Again, they are here to bless you. You might end up seeing something else that affects you later that you wouldn’t have, had they not been in your way, or provided a distraction, so you started paying attention. Or, you might avoid being in an accident that would have happened, had you been 10 seconds earlier to a specific location on your drive, or a million other scenarios you know nothing about, but are missing for a reason. They may be protecting you, and you are completely unaware of the myriad of possibilities.
Tip: Keep your magic blessing taped to your dashboard or radio, so you don’t forget to say it.
Note: If you have a problem with the word “God”, try using “Source”, “Creator”, “Universe” or even “Mother Earth”, instead.
Finally, let me know how you’re doing, by commenting below. Has this practice changed your life in some way? Do you notice more blessings coming to you? Maybe these are in the form of a calmer mood, being more productive, becoming happier, things going easier for you etc. And remember that you can do this for anyone that crosses your path, not just other drivers!
God bless you, thank you!
